2015 Lindau Nobel Laureate continues to dissent on CO2 alarmism, noting, 'You don't have to even be a scientist' to understand CO2 isn't a problem. Friends warned Nature Mag might punish him: 'My friends said I should not make fun of Nature because then they won’t publish my papers.'

.
Only 55% of 2015 Nobel Laureate Lindau scientists agreed. Dr. Giaever was among 29 who did not sign. 36 who did sign listed at end of this post.

"Dr. Ivar Giaever, a Nobel Prize-Winner for physics in 1973, declared his dissent on man-made global warming claims at a Nobel forum on July 1, 2015."...

[Ed. note: The page with Dr. Giaever's 7/1/15 Lindau speech isn't dated but appears after the headline, "Daily Recap, Wednesday, 1 July 2015." Below the first video is following text: "This is not the only video from today! You are more than welcome to browse through our mediatheque for more." Dr. Giaver's is 7th video in line.]

(continuing): "“I would say that basically global warming is a non-problem,” Dr. Giaever announced during his speech titled “Global Warming Revisited.

Giaever, a former professor at the School of Engineering and School of Science Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, received the 1973 physics Nobel for his work on quantum tunneling. Giaever delivered his remarks at the 65th Nobel Laureate Conference in Lindau, Germany, which drew 65 recipients of the prize. Giaever is also featured in the new documentary “Climate Hustle”, set for release in Fall 2015.

Giaever was one of President Obama’s key scientific supporters in 2008 when he joined over 70 Nobel Science Laureates in endorsing Obama in an October 29, 2008 open letter. Giaever signed his name to the letter which read in part: “The country urgently needs a visionary leader…We are convinced that Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting him.”

But seven years after signing the letter, Giaever now mocks President Obama for warning that “no challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change”. Giaever called it a “ridiculous statement.”

“That is what he said. That is a ridiculous statement,” Giaever explained.

“I say this to Obama: Excuse me, Mr. President, but you’re wrong. Dead wrong,” Giaever said. (Watch Giaever’s full 30-minute July 1 speech here.)

“How can he say that? I think Obama is a clever person, but he gets bad advice. Global warming is all wet,” he added.

“Obama said last year that 2014 is hottest year ever. But it’s not true. It’s not the hottest,” Giaever noted. [Note: Other scientists have reversed themselves on climate change.

The Nobel physicist questioned the basis for rising carbon dioxide fears.

When you have a theory and the theory does not agree with the experiment then you have to cut out the theory. You were wrong with the theory,Giaever explained.

Global Warming ‘a new religion’

Giaever said his climate research was eye opening. “I was horrified by what I found” after researching the issue in 2012, he noted.

“Global warming really has become a new religion. Because you cannot discuss it. It’s not proper. It is like the Catholic Church.”

Concern Over ‘Successful’ UN Climate Treaty

“I am worried very much about the [UN] conference in Paris in November. I really worry about that. Because the [2009 UN] conference was in Copenhagen and that almost became a disaster but nothing got decided. But now I think that the people who are alarmist are in a very strong position,” Giaever said.

“The facts are that in the last 100 years we have measured the temperatures it has gone up .8 degrees and everything in the world has gotten better. So how can they say it’s going to get worse when we have the evidence? We live longer, better health, and better everything. But if it goes up another .8 degrees we are going to die I guess,” he noted.

Silencing Debate

Giaever accused Nature Magazine of “wanting to cash in on the [climate] fad.”

My friends said I should not make fun of Nature because then they won’t publish my papers,” he explained.

“No one mentions how important CO2 is for plant growth. It’s a wonderful thing. Plants are really starving. They don’t talk about how good it is for agriculture that CO2 is increasing,” he added.

Extreme Weather claims

“The other thing that amazes me is that when you talk about climate change it is always going to be the worst. It’s got to be better someplace for heaven’s sake. It can’t always be to the worse,” he said.

Then comes the clincher. If climate change does not scare people we can scare people talking about the extreme weather,Giaever said.

“For the last hundred years, the ocean has risen 20 cm — but for the previous hundred years the ocean also has risen 20 cm and for the last 300 years, the ocean has also risen 20 cm per 100 years. So there is no unusual rise in sea level. And to be sure you understand that I will repeat it. There is no unusual rise in sea level,” Giaever said.

“If anything we have entered period of low hurricanes. These are the facts,” he continued.

You don’t’ have to even be a scientist to look at these figures and you understand what it says,” he added.

“Same thing is for tornadoes. We are in a low period on in U.S.”"

At 2015 Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting Giaever states again the reason for his 2011 resignation from the American Physical Society:

7/1/15, "Global Warming Revisited, Ivar Giaever (2015)," Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

"Abstract"

"Because of the following statement from the American Physical Society:

“The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.

If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.”

I resigned from the society in 2011. First: nothing in science is incontrovertible. Second: the “measured” average temperature increase in 100 years or so, is 0.8 Kelvin. Third: since the Physical Society claim it has become warmer, why is everything better than before? Forth: the maximum average temperature ever measured was in 1998, 17 years ago. When will we stop wasting money on alternative energy?"...

"There is an annual conference of Nobel Prize Laureates (NPL), commonly held on the picturesque island of Mainau in Lake Constance, Germany, picture below. The 65th of such meetings, under the name Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings just concluded.

Purpose of the Meetings

The purpose of their meetings is found on their website:

Once every year, some dozens of Nobel Laureates convene at Lindau to meet the next generation of leading scientists: undergraduates, PhD students, and post-doc researchers from all over the world. The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings foster the exchange among scientists of different generations, cultures, and disciplines.

Undoubtedly, it’s a laudable intention and, who knows, there may well be future Nobel Laureates among the listeners. The assembled laureates also have become known for signing “declarations” of sorts that are supposed to warn the world of potential problems and consequences. This year was no exception. A total of 36 out of 65 Nobel Laureates signed the “Mainau Declaration 2015 on Climate Change;available in six languages.  You may have noticed that’s just barely over one half of the attendees.

If one thing is obvious, not everyone buys into the climate-change and doom-and-gloom hype!  Now, let’s drill down a bit further and look at the numbers in different Nobel Prize fields of honor.

Nobel Prize Fields of Honour

Initially (in 1895), there were only five disciplines Alfred Nobel’s foundation prizes were to go to, namely:
  • Chemistry,
  • Literature,
  • Peace,
  • Physics,
  • Physiology or Medicine
Later on, in 1968, the “Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences” was added by Sweden’s central bank.

Now to some details of the 2015 NPL meeting at Mainau as it relates to their declaration.

 The Mainau 2015 Declaration

...................

In brief, the Mainau 2015 Declaration (MD) says, inter alia, “Based on the IPCC assessment, the world must make rapid progress towards lowering current and future greenhouse gas emissions to minimize the substantial risks of climate change.” IPCC, of course stands for the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Even shirking any direct opinion on the actually perceived “risks,” as proclaimed by the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report, the assembled Laureates did not sign this declaration in unison. In fact, nearly half of them did not. The percentages of those signing onto it versus not signing were almost even between the fields of chemistry, physics, and physiology or medicine.

Clearly then, even though the declaration’s carefully crafted text that refers to the IPCC’s claims rather than their own opinions, it did not sway many of the Nobel Laureates to sign this year’s declaration." image above from Canada Free Press

7/3/15,  Lindau Laureate Meetings: "A record number of 65 laureates and more than 650 young scientists from about 90 countries are participating in the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting"

"We say this not as experts in the field of climate change, but rather as a diverse group of scientists who have a deep respect for and understanding of the integrity of the scientific process."

7/3/15, "Mainau Declaration 2015 on Climate Change"

"We undersigned scientists, who have been awarded Nobel Prizes, have come to the shores of Lake Constance in southern Germany, to share insights with promising young researchers, who like us come from around the world. Nearly 60 years ago, here on Mainau, a similar gathering of Nobel Laureates in science issued a declaration of the dangers inherent in the newly found technology of nuclear weapons—a technology derived from advances in basic science. So far we have avoided nuclear war though the threat remains. We believe that our world today faces another threat of comparable magnitude.
............................
Successive generations of scientists have helped create a more and more prosperous world. This prosperity has come at the cost of a rapid rise in the consumption of the world’s resources. If left unchecked, our ever-increasing demand for food, water, and energy will eventually overwhelm the Earth’s ability to satisfy humanity’s needs, and will lead to wholesale human tragedy. Already, scientists who study Earth’s climate are observing the impact of human activity.
.............................
In response to the possibility of human-induced climate change, the United Nations established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide the world’s leaders a summary of the current state of relevant scientific knowledge. While by no means perfect, we believe that the efforts that have led to the current IPCC Fifth Assessment Report represent the best source of information regarding the present state of knowledge on climate change. We say this not as experts in the field of climate change, but rather as a diverse group of scientists who have a deep respect for and understanding of the integrity of the scientific process.
........................
Although there remains uncertainty as to the precise extent of climate change, the conclusions of the scientific community contained in the latest IPCC report are alarming, especially in the context of the identified risks of maintaining human prosperity in the face of greater than a 2°C rise in average global temperature. The report concludes that anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are the likely cause of the current global warming of the Earth. Predictions from the range of climate models indicate that this warming will very likely increase the Earth’s temperature over the coming century by more than 2°C above its pre-industrial level unless dramatic reductions are made in anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases over the coming decades.
..........................
Based on the IPCC assessment, the world must make rapid progress towards lowering current and future greenhouse gas emissions to minimize the substantial risks of climate change. We believe that the nations of the world must take the opportunity at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015 to take decisive action to limit future global emissions. This endeavor will require the cooperation of all nations, whether developed or developing, and must be sustained into the future in accord with updated scientific assessment....
